Flute & Recorder Lessons

Flute & Recorder Lessons

Private flute lessons are engaging, challenging, and fun. Having earned flute performance degrees at the University of Colorado at Boulder (MM 2001) and The Ohio State University (BM 1999), I am classically trained. I believe that learning the fundamentals of proper technique, proper hand and body position, and the core repertoire are important. My primary goal is to foster a lifelong enjoyment of music.

Flute Lessons

Private lessons should be a well-balanced mix of hard work and joyful expression. Lessons often include improvisation, world musics, jazz, ear training, and sight-reading . My training in Dalcroze Eurythmics, Alexander Technique, piccolo technique, and Baroque performance practice further enhance lessons.

Recorder Lessons

Children as young as 4 years old can begin playing the recorder. At about age 6 or 7, children are physically ready to begin flute studies. I like to begin students at a young age and use a series of books on recorder and plastic fife to lead seamlessly into flute instruction.

Most young students take a 30 minute lesson once a week. Advanced high school students and adults often need a one hour lesson.

Lessons are taught in the home studio near Galena, Ohio, and online via Zoom or FaceTime.

All of my students have the opportunity to play on a yearly studio recital, usually held in early November. Middle and high school students are strongly encouraged to enter flute competitions and the OMEA Solo and Ensemble Contest.

Contact me to set up an introductory meeting to discuss your goals and to talk about my studio policies. We’ll have a mini-lesson and then we can look at scheduling a regular lesson time. Lessons are taught at my home studio in Galena, OH. My current students attend the following school districts: Big Walnut, Olentangy, Buckeye Valley, Westerville, Delaware City, and Worthington.

“Thank you so much for your love of music and children…. We feel lucky to have had you as a music teacher for Alison. She has learned a great deal from you. Thank you so much for working with her.”
~ Anne C., mother of Alison, age 7

“Marlene, who brought music to me and so changed my life. I want to thank you.”
~ Russ O.

“You are a great flute teacher! I have learned so much and I can’t wait to learn more!
~ Rachelle, age 15

“I can’t even begin to express what you have done for me this year…. I have learned to take a piece of music and transform it into a story of my own. You have taught me to make my own decisions, and I will take that with me forever. I have learned what it truly means to make music. None of what I did this year could have been achieved without your generosity and talent. I’m really going to miss you next year [at college]. Please know that you have profoundly influenced my life.”
~ Beth B., age 18

  1. Hello, I would like to learn more about your flute lessons. Can you tell me the cost for 30 minute and 60 minutes lessons and are you adverse to lesson biweekly rather than weekly?

    Thank you!
